Breaking: New York Jets are working out Matt Araiza aka the PUNT GOD
The New York Jets are working out Matt Araiza today, we at NFL Draft Diamonds are learning.
Araiza has one of the biggest legs in the country. He was drafted by division rival Buffalo after winning the Ray Guy Award in 2021. Araiza was a big time kicker and punter coming out of Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, California.
He averaged 51.2 yards per punt his final season with the Aztecs. He is a very solid player, and one of the best young punters available right now. Last week he was cleared by police of gang rape.
Both San Diego State University and the police after conducting an investigation into allegations of rape and gang rape, found that Araiza was not present at the time of the incident. A criminal investigation was also conducted, with no charges filed, and a civil case remains ongoing in the matter. Will this matter to the New York Jets? Working out a player with a civil case open?
Araiza still has the civil case ongoing, but he would be a huge addition to the Jets. I am a huge believer in second chances, and he recently sat down with Tomi Lahren to tell her that he does not hold anything against Buffalo for cutting him, and that he was just hoping for another opportunity to play in the NFL.
“I hold nothing against the Buffalo Bills, I wish things were handled differently,” Araiza continued. “But they did treat me with respect, which I appreciate. It’s just the climate of how things are now. Accusations bring so much hate to anyone who stands by the accuser that they were kind of forced to cut me from the team.”
“In my heart, I believe that I will get another shot at the NFL and I’m looking forward to that,” Araiza said. “I’m staying ready and just waiting for my name to be called.”
Can the New York Jets land Matt Araiza after a workout?
If the Jets do in fact sign him, he will be able to potentially stick it to the team that drafted him twice a year as they are rivals in the AFC East. The Jets have been adding depth at every position this year. They are going to have a much better roster than last year.
The only punter on the Jets roster right now is Thomas Morstead, and while he is a veteran playing in his 15th season. With OTA’s happening this week, I am wondering if the Jets would rather have a younger player with a bigger leg. Morstead averaged 46.3 yards per punt last year. We are pumped for Matt Araiza earning a workout with the Jets!
