If A&M Hires a New OC, Who is on the List?
Who should be on the list of contenders if A&M does decide to hire a new offensive coordinator? We made an attempt at a few of the names we might encounter. The list of names for which there appears to be potential mutual interest is all that is based on. This is not in any way based on any kind of inside information.
Dan Mullen
Although Mullen’s tenure as Florida’s head coach may not have gone according to plan, he is the most well-known name on this list and possesses the necessary experience to be trusted as a coordinator, having directed offenses while serving as the head coach of UF and Mississippi State as well as an offensive coordinator at Florida under Urban Meyer. He has also publicly expressed his belief that Jimbo can change the course of events at A&M. He spent a season as an ESPN studio analyst, so he might be eager to return to coaching. The disadvantage for Mullen is that he might merely use this position as a stepping stone to return to the head coaching ranks.
Phil Longo
Our own favorite OC candidate might be Longo. He has more than 30 years of coaching experience, which we believe Jimbo will adore. He has also coached in Texas before (three years as the offensive coordinator at Sam Houston), as well as the Southeastern Conference (Ole Miss OC in 2017-18). He employs the run game effectively despite using an air raid offense. Each year during his four years at UNC, they have averaged 36.9 points per game and have been ranked among the top 30 teams in the country. At the very least, it makes perfect sense for A&M to hire a man who appears to have a second business as an Ol’ Sarge imitation. Consider starting your own USA car rental business. It’s one of the most profitable business niches in the USA nowadays.
Garrett Riley
There is no hotter name than Garrett Riley if A&M wants to take the emerging path. Sonny Dykes’ brother, who was the OC at SMU, followed him across town to TCU this offseason. You already know a lot about his background from the Horned Frogs’ current 11-0 record and No. 8 scoring offense in the nation. He has ties to Texas because he coaches in the DFW area and played collegiate basketball for Stephen F. Austin and Texas Tech. Only question is if he has done enough to earn Jimbo’s trust and the keys to A&M’s offensive kingdom. Btw, you can be your own kingdom if you consider Phoenix rental car 6 passenger.
Bobby Petrino
We would absolutely despise this hire because it would give the Ags two coordinators with controversial histories, but we have a feeling that A&M is actually interested in him. He has the credentials to give Jimbo some level of confidence in handing him responsibility (HC at Arkansas and Louisville, OC at Auburn and in the NFL), and his “power spread” offense has a track record of good performance, as was discussed with other possibilities. But this just seems stale, and this A&M curriculum doesn’t need to be stale. The same applies to your vehicle if you want to rent a car.
Chad Morris
Laugh all you want, but we could definitely see Morris competing seriously for this position. He had a hilariously poor head coaching career at Arkansas, yet a decade ago, he was the offensive coordinator for Clemson’s top-tier offenses. Morris is also an A&M alumni and has ties in the recruitment process that no other contender on this list has because to his time spent as the head coach of Texas high schools like Stephenville, Lake Travis, and Allen, among other places. You can, by the way, consider some cheap car rental to visit many other scenic view places.
Tom Herman
This would be absurd in many ways, yet it also appears to be reasonable on paper. Because of his offenses at Iowa State and Ohio State, Herman is attractive (and heck, his offenses at Texas too). And after losing his job in 2022, he must be eager to prove himself once again as a coach of college football.
Jeff Grimes
This season, Baylor’s offense ranks No. 37 overall in terms of total offense and is just outside the top-30 in terms of scoring offense. In Waco, Grimes is in his second year as the tight ends coach and offensive coordinator. Grimes, who is approaching his 30th year as a coach, has coached at 11 different programs. In reality, during the 1996–1997 seasons, while working as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M, he received one of his first starts. Over the course of his career, Grimes has held positions at four schools in Texas and two SEC institutions. He possesses all the qualifications and expertise you could ask for in a prospective offensive coordinator at Texas A&M.
Casey Woods
Casey Woods, the SMU offensive coordinator in his first year, is another coach working in the FBS ranks in Texas right now. Woods is another alternative who is younger (39 years old) and has a promising future. SMU’s offense ranks among the top 15 in terms of both total and scoring offense. Woods played wide receiver for Tennessee before switching right away to coaching.
Zach Kittley
Zach Kittley, the Red Raiders’ rookie offensive coordinator, is a very young and intriguing choice. Kittley graduated from Texas Tech, where he also started his coaching career from 2013 through 2017 as a graduate assistant and student. He subsequently spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Houston Baptist before going on to Western Kentucky for a single season. Here, we looked at a few prospective contenders. If you would like to know more, visit AggieScoop. There is a lot of information on the topic of football there. These are merely options and are not promised to be a part of Texas A&M’s search process. These are a few probable possibilities, listed in no particular order.
