Player Summary:
Tucker Gregg is a bowling ball of a runningback who uses his short but powerful frame to pound the ball downfield or look for a block that can set his teammates up for success. He is undersized in height but carries a lot of mass in his trunk and legs. He possesses adequate athletic ability and explosive speed, but has above average power out of the backfield. He is a tough, physical runner who keeps his feet pounding after contact. He has sufficient balance and agility, and does well to remain light on his feet in pass protection. Not a back who wins with elusivity or quickness, but rather wins by running through contact at the line of scrimmage to try to break a big play. He runs primarily between the tackles but has good reps getting outside and fighting upfield. Good patience and vision to run behind his blockers and look for the hole. Limited target tape, but does well to generate separation and find open space when running a route. Where Gregg shines brightest is his ability and willingness to pick up a block. His head is always up in pass protection scanning possible pickups. He is an excellent runblocker and frequently sets the primary block for a teammate to gain a big play, although he prefers to block with his shoulder more often than getting his hands inside. Gregg began his collegiate career as a walk-on and earned a scholarship from his efforts on special teams in his first season. He entered his last season of eligibility as the Panthers’ 3rd leading rusher with a real chance to claim the title this year.
Scheme Fit:
Although his target tape is limited, if his receiving ability develops well, Gregg stands to benefit in third down roles in a power run scheme, as well as on special teams. Size is his only limiting factor against bigger linemen, but could also be utilized as a fullback in some schemes.
Power Statement:
Tucker Gregg is a hard nosed runner who makes up for his undersized frame with his running power and great blocking ability. Gregg projects to compete for a camp spot as a high performing blocker on special teams.
