Small School college football player dies in drowning accident in Lake Michigan
Mike Hooffstetter, a Sophomore football player at Capital University was swimming with friends this weekend when waves and currents overwhelmed him. The 19-year-old football player’s body was later discovered in Lake Michigan on Monday morning.
Capital University is a private university in Bexley, Ohio. Capital was founded as the Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio in 1830, and later was associated with that synod’s successor, the American Lutheran Church.
The school released this statement about the death of Hooffstetter:
“The death of any member of the Capital Family is difficult, but it’s especially hard to accept when it’s a student who had so much life ahead of him,” said Capital University President Dave Kaufman. “Mike shone academically and athletically. Even in just his first year as a football player, he demonstrated a strong commitment to the team and an unwavering dedication to his teammates.”
Mike was a smart kid who played defensive end for Capital University. He racked up 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks as a freshman.
Mike is survived by his mother Cathy, his father Mike, and a younger brother.
