Will the XFL surpass their 2001 attendance numbers in their first year?
I was searching online because I want to see the XFL succeed, so I went back to 2001 when the XFL first started their football league. We obviously know it did not work out, but I wanted to know how much better their attendance was then than the recently failed AAF League.
So I stumbled upon a message board called XFL Board, and I was surprised that the XFL actually had better numbers than the AAF back in 2001. We recently conducted a research that in their final attendance report, the AAF never broke 500k fans in attendance in 32 games. Of course the season was cut short, but this was pretty impressive to me.
Here are the attendance numbers for the 2001 XFL Season.
In 40 games. The league drew 936,419 fans. The average attendance was 23,410. The XFL would have probably drawn even better in the second half of the season, but it was seen as a dead product by the public and mainstream by week 7.
#1- San Francisco Demons- 5 home games, drew a total of 175,204 fans, for an average attendance of 35,005.
#2- New York/New Jersey Hitmen- 5 home games, drew a total of 141,545 fans, for an average attendance of 28,309.
#3- Orlando Rage- 5 home games, drew a total of 127,817 fans, for an average attendance of 25,563.
#4- Los Angeles Xtreme- 5 homes games, drew a total of 113,395 fans, for an average attendance of 22,679.
#5- Las Vegas Outlaws- 5 home games, drew a total of 113,096 fans, for an average attendance of 22, 618.
#6- Memphis Maniax- 5 home games, drew a total of 101,981 fans, for an average attendance of 20,396.
#7- Birmingham Thunderbolts- 5 home games, drew a total of 85,012 fans, for an average attendance of 17,002.
#8- Chicago Enforcers- 5 home games, drew a total of 78,549 fans, for an average attendance of 15, 710.
The XFL some reason stayed away from San Francisco, but if they are thinking about an expansion team they may want to consider San Francisco considering the attendance they recently put out. Another place they may want to consider is San Antonio who averaged 27,721 fans per game during the AAF. They had quite a bit of fans showing up. This is something to think about down the road.
