A South Alabama high school is closed Monday following the tragic death of one of its students in a weekend traffic accident.

Ke’Maurion Porter, 18, died Sunday night after a crash on Interstate 65 in Conecuh County, according to the Conecuh County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities said the accident occurred at approximately 9:29 p.m. Porter was involved in a collision with another vehicle. After exiting his vehicle following the crash, Porter attempted to cross the interstate when he was struck by an 18-wheeler.

Porter was transported to Evergreen Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The news has sent shockwaves through the local school community, prompting the high school to close for the day as students, faculty and staff mourn the loss of the 18-year-old.

Details surrounding exactly what led to the crash and the circumstances surrounding Porter’s attempt to cross the interstate remain under investigation.

The Conecuh County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are continuing to investigate the incident.
