The wait is almost over.

On July 30, Pittman’s Pocket will officially unveil its highly anticipated 2026-27 HBCU True Freshman All-American Team, highlighting some of the most talented incoming freshmen and redshirt freshmen preparing to make an impact across Historically Black Colleges and Universities this fall.

With more than 60 freshmen and redshirt freshmen currently being evaluated, the race for HBCU Freshman of the Year is already generating excitement among coaches, scouts, recruiters, and fans throughout Black College Football.

This year’s watchlist showcases elite talent from across the country, representing powerhouse high school programs from Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Georgia, and beyond. The collection of prospects reflects the continued growth of HBCU football recruiting and the increasing number of talented athletes choosing HBCU programs as their path to success.

Among the highly regarded prospects drawing attention are quarterback Tyler Hampton of Sylvan Hills High School in Arkansas, defensive tackle Malachi McDonald, a U.S. Army All-American from Bryant High School, and safety Kavontae Whipple of Cincinnati, Ohio. Their athleticism, leadership, and production have earned them recognition as players capable of contributing immediately at the collegiate level.

The watchlist also features dynamic playmakers such as running back Amarie Jackson of Pascagoula, Mississippi, quarterback Joel Morris of Sarasota, Florida, linebacker Quinton Evans of Eustis, Florida, defensive standout Terrell Evans of Hialeah, Florida, and versatile athlete Jordan Francis, whose combination of size and speed has attracted attention throughout the Southeast.

Several prospects entering HBCU football this season carry three-star recruiting rankings and arrive with impressive resumes from respected high school programs. Wide receiver Eric Paul Jr. of Fairburn, Georgia, defensive prospect J’Zavien Currence of Rock Hill, South Carolina, linebacker Jaydon Broomfield of Katy, Texas, and offensive lineman Brison Brooks of Dallas, Texas, represent the type of high-character, high-upside athletes HBCU programs continue to attract.

The quarterback position remains one of the strongest groups on the watchlist. Players such as Mack Cooper from California, Joel Morris from Florida, Tyler Hampton from Arkansas, and Vashaun Coulon from New Orleans bring leadership, football intelligence, and playmaking ability that could elevate their respective programs immediately.

At the skill positions, explosive athletes such as Li’Darious Pryor, Eric Paul Jr., and several other emerging stars are expected to make their presence felt early as freshmen. Their ability to create big plays and impact games in multiple ways has coaches excited about the future of their programs.

On the defensive side, players like Malachi McDonald, Quinton Evans, Terrell Evans, J’Zavien Currence, Jaydon Broomfield, and Kavontae Whipple represent a new generation of defenders capable of changing games through physicality, speed, and football instincts.

What makes this year’s class especially intriguing is the quality of coaching these student-athletes will receive. Programs across the SWAC, MEAC, OVC-Big South, SIAC, CIAA, and other HBCU conferences continue to invest in player development while providing opportunities for young athletes to compete at a high level.

The influence of respected HBCU coaches throughout the country has helped create an environment where incoming freshmen can develop both on and off the field. As a result, many of these young men enter college with realistic opportunities to compete for playing time and become future conference stars.
