West Virginia Football Commit Chris Wilson Jr. Killed in Overnight Shooting

The football community is mourning the loss of one of Indiana’s top young defensive prospects after Chris Wilson Jr., a 17-year-old standout from Yorktown High School and a recent West Virginia football commit, was killed in an overnight shooting in Muncie, Indiana.
According to authorities, Muncie Police Department emergency dispatchers received a report of shots fired at approximately 2:59 a.m. Monday. Officers responding to the scene found Wilson inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No further details regarding the investigation have been released.
Wilson Was One of Indiana’s Top 2027 Prospects
While his life was tragically cut short, Wilson had already established himself as one of the most promising young defensive players in the state.
The 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end was a standout at Yorktown High School and was regarded as a three-star prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
During his junior season in 2025, Wilson recorded 25 tackles, four sacks and an interception, helping Yorktown capture a Class 4A sectional championship.
He continued to make an impact during the 2026 season, recording 12 tackles and one sack through five games.
ESPN ranked Wilson as the No. 11 overall recruit in the state of Indiana in the 2027 recruiting class.
Wilson was also a multi-sport athlete at Yorktown, competing in the discus for the school’s track and field program.
Wilson Had Already Earned Major College Interest
Wilson’s potential was evident to college programs across the country.
The talented defensive lineman received offers from more than a dozen Division I programs before ultimately making his college decision.
In June, Wilson announced his commitment to West Virginia, choosing the Mountaineers over programs including Auburn, Cincinnati and Purdue.
His commitment came after an official visit to West Virginia, where the Mountaineers were able to land one of the top defensive prospects in Indiana’s 2027 class.
For West Virginia, Wilson represented a significant addition to its future defensive line. For his family, teammates and coaches, however, he was much more than a recruiting ranking or football prospect.
He was a 17-year-old young man whose future appeared incredibly bright.
A Young Life Cut Short
Wilson’s death is another heartbreaking reminder that behind every recruiting profile is a young person with family, friends, teammates and coaches who care deeply about them.
His Yorktown teammates and the Indiana high school football community are now left to remember a player who had already made an impact on the field and was preparing for the next chapter of his life at West Virginia.
The investigation into Wilson’s death remains ongoing.
