Pittman’s Pocket: IMG Academy 2027 Star Keith Smith Commits to Jackson State

By Pittman’s Pocket
Jackson State University has landed another significant piece for its future, as IMG Academy 2027 running back and return specialist Keith Smith has committed to the Tigers.
For Jackson State, this is more than simply adding another running back to a recruiting class. Smith brings a unique combination of national-level high school experience, all-purpose production, return ability and positional versatility that could eventually translate into multiple roles at the collegiate level.
Smith has spent the 2025-26 season at national powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he has transitioned into a part-time running back while becoming a full-time weapon on special teams. According to recent reporting, Smith has produced 171 rushing yards and a 91-yard kickoff return touchdown for the Ascenders.
Before arriving at IMG Academy, Smith established himself as one of the more productive playmakers at Manatee High School, where he accumulated 1,739 all-purpose yards and 16 total touchdowns.
That production tells an important part of the story.
Smith isn’t simply a running back.
He has demonstrated the ability to impact a football game through rushing, explosive plays and the return game.
A Major Addition to Jackson State
Jackson State has continued to build its 2027 recruiting class under head coach T.C. Taylor, and Smith’s commitment gives the Tigers another player with experience competing in one of the country’s most recognizable high-school football environments.
The significance of Smith choosing Jackson State also extends beyond the football field.
An athlete coming from IMG Academy choosing an HBCU creates another opportunity to demonstrate that HBCU football can attract players from nationally recognized programs and develop them toward the next level.
For Jackson State, Smith can potentially become part of an offensive and special-teams package designed around creating explosive plays.
His return ability alone gives the Tigers another avenue to change field position.
His running-back experience gives the coaching staff another potential offensive weapon.
And his background at IMG provides him with experience competing against elite high-school talent.
Why the Celebration Bowl Matters
For Smith, attending the Celebration Bowl as a Jackson State commit could be particularly meaningful.
The Celebration Bowl represents the championship meeting between the MEAC and SWAC, with the 2026 game scheduled for December 12 in Atlanta.
For a young prospect preparing to enter the HBCU football landscape, being present at an event of that magnitude can provide an opportunity to experience the culture, visibility and national stage surrounding HBCU football before officially beginning his college career.
More importantly, it can allow Smith to publicly embrace his decision.
Walking into the Celebration Bowl wearing Jackson State colors, interacting with current players, coaches, alumni and HBCU fans, and being introduced to the broader HBCU community would make his commitment more than an announcement on social media.
It would become a statement:
Keith Smith has chosen Jackson State.
That matters because recruiting is also about community.
Smith is coming from IMG Academy, one of the most recognizable football programs in the country. His decision to take his talents to Jackson State creates another bridge between elite national high-school football and the HBCU football ecosystem.
The NFL Evaluation Begins Now
From an NFL scouting perspective, Smith is a prospect worth monitoring throughout his development.
The NFL increasingly values players who can contribute in multiple phases of the game. A running back who can also return kicks has an opportunity to demonstrate value beyond traditional rushing statistics.
Smith’s early evaluation should focus on several areas:
• Explosive acceleration
Can he turn a crease into a long gain?
• Contact balance
Can he maintain his run through first contact?
• Vision
Can he identify developing running lanes quickly?
• Receiving ability
Can he become a legitimate threat out of the backfield?
• Pass protection
Can he earn trust on passing downs?
• Return ability
Can his kickoff-return production translate against college-level special teams?
• Positional versatility
Can he become an all-purpose weapon rather than being limited to one offensive role?
Those questions will ultimately determine how his NFL projection develops.
But the foundation is intriguing.
A player with significant all-purpose production, experience at IMG Academy and legitimate return ability gives NFL scouts multiple reasons to continue watching his development.
The “Diamond in the Rough” Question
One of the most interesting parts of Smith’s future evaluation will be whether Jackson State can expand his role.
At IMG, Smith has had to compete within a deep and highly talented environment. His role has included special teams while still producing as a runner.
At Jackson State, the opportunity could eventually exist for him to demonstrate what he can do with a larger offensive workload.
That is where his NFL evaluation could become much clearer.
If Smith develops into a productive college running back while maintaining his return ability, his scouting profile could evolve from running back prospect into all-purpose offensive and special-teams prospect.
That distinction can matter significantly at the professional level.
Pittman’s Pocket Evaluation
Keith Smith is an outstanding signing for Jackson State.
Not simply because of where he comes from, but because of what he brings.
IMG Academy experience.
Manatee production.
1,739 previous all-purpose yards.
16 touchdowns.
171 rushing yards this season.
A 91-yard kickoff return touchdown.
And now a commitment to Jackson State.
The next chapter is about development.
If Smith can translate his explosiveness, vision and return ability into consistent production against college competition, Jackson State could have a player capable of becoming one of the more intriguing all-purpose weapons in its future offensive arsenal.
And from the HBCU perspective, his commitment represents something bigger.
Another nationally recognized prospect has chosen an HBCU.
That deserves to be celebrated.
The Celebration Bowl would be an appropriate stage for Smith to experience that culture firsthand, stand alongside the Jackson State community and begin building his identity within HBCU football before he ever takes his first collegiate snap.
Keith Smith is headed to Jackson State.
