U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Ian Patterson died after falling from the rafters of the Alamodome during a rappelling demonstration before Saturday’s football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Navy. He was a 15-year military veteran.

The U.S. military has identified Patterson as a tactical air control party instructor assigned to the Sixth Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, at Joint Base San Antonio in Texas.

According to a statement released Sunday by Nellis Air Force Base, Patterson was from Fort Stewart, Georgia, and had served in the Air Force for 15 years. He was participating in a pregame rappelling demonstration when the incident occurred at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The demonstration was part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game against Navy, an event honoring military personnel and veterans. The tragic incident occurred before kickoff, casting a shadow over the game-day festivities.

Patterson was an accomplished member of the Air Force, having been named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year at the Headquarters Air Force level in 2022. His recognition reflected his contributions to training and developing fellow service members.

Brig. Gen. Scott C. Mills, commander of the Air Force’s 57th Wing, expressed condolences following Patterson’s death, emphasizing the impact of his service and the loss felt throughout the military community.

“This tragedy is felt deeply,” the statement attributed to Mills said. “Tech Sgt Patterson and his service mattered immensely to our wing, and to the family, friends, and teammates who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”

The statement added that the unit’s focus was on supporting Patterson’s family, loved ones, and fellow Air Force members as they grieve.

An investigation was underway to determine the circumstances that led to Patterson’s fall during the demonstration. Officials have not publicly disclosed further details about what caused the incident.

Patterson’s death is a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and fellow service members. After dedicating 15 years to serving his country, he is being remembered for his commitment to the Air Force and the people he served alongside.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tech Sgt. Ian Patterson’s family, friends, and fellow service members during this difficult time.
