High School Football Player Chance Daniels Dies After Mississippi Shooting and Crash

The Mississippi high school football community is mourning the loss of Sumrall High School football player Chancellor “Chance” Daniels, who died Sunday night after being injured in a shooting and subsequent vehicle crash in Jefferson Davis County.
Daniels, a student-athlete at Sumrall High School, had taken the field for what would be his final football game Friday night when Sumrall faced Jefferson Davis County High School.
According to law enforcement, the events that led to Daniels’ death began around 11:30 p.m. Sunday when shots were fired in or around an ATV park near State Route 42 in Jefferson Davis County.
Following the shooting, Daniels reportedly entered a vehicle with an unidentified female. Authorities said the woman drove approximately a mile and a half before the vehicle was involved in a crash within the Prentiss city limits.
Daniels and the woman were reportedly on their way to the hospital when the crash occurred.
Despite efforts to get Daniels medical attention, he died from injuries sustained during the incident.
The shooting and crash are being investigated separately by two law enforcement agencies. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is handling the shooting investigation, while the Prentiss Police Department is investigating the vehicle crash.
At this time, authorities have not released additional details regarding what led to the shooting or whether any arrests have been made.
For the Sumrall football program, the loss is particularly heartbreaking. Daniels had just competed on the football field Friday night, never knowing it would be his final game.
High school football is about more than wins and losses. Behind every jersey is a student, teammate, son, friend and young person with a future ahead of them.
Daniels’ death leaves his family, teammates, coaches, classmates and the Sumrall community grieving the loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.
Draft Diamonds extends its condolences to the Daniels family, his teammates and everyone in the Sumrall High School community affected by this tragedy.
