D.J. Reader Foundation to Cover Funeral Expenses for North Carolina High School Football Player

The North Carolina high school football community is mourning the loss of 15-year-old Davion Fewell, a Page High School junior varsity football player who died days after suffering an injury during a game.

Fewell was injured on Thursday, September 10, during Page High School’s junior varsity game against rival Grimsley High School in Greensboro. He was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and transported to a hospital, where he later died. His family confirmed his death on Sunday, September 13.

The exact nature of Fewell’s injury has not been publicly released.

As the Fewell family prepares to lay their son to rest, the D.J. Reader Foundation has stepped forward to help. The foundation, established by New York Giants defensive lineman and former Grimsley High School standout D.J. Reader, will cover the funeral and burial expenses for the young football player.

Reader, a Greensboro-area native and Grimsley alumnus, has remained connected to the local community through his foundation. The organization’s assistance will provide financial support to Fewell’s family during an incredibly difficult time.

The tragedy has affected both the Page and Grimsley football communities. Guilford County Schools has expressed condolences to Fewell’s family, teammates, coaches and classmates, while a crisis team has been made available to help students and staff cope with the loss.

Page Pirates Football also announced plans for a candlelight vigil in Fewell’s memory, giving teammates, classmates and members of the community an opportunity to come together and honor his life.

While the circumstances surrounding the injury remain under review, the focus for the community has shifted toward remembering a young student-athlete whose life was tragically cut short.
