Three Bold Predictions for 49ers vs. Rams

The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will open the 2026 NFL season in historic fashion tonight at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. While the Rams enter the matchup as the favorites, I believe San Francisco is capable of pulling off the upset.

My prediction is 49ers 21, Rams 13, and I have three bold predictions that could help determine the outcome.

1. George Kittle Scores a Touchdown

George Kittle finds the end zone.

Kittle’s return is one of the biggest storylines heading into this matchup. The veteran tight end has worked his way back from an Achilles injury and has been cleared to play after being removed from the injury report.

Even if San Francisco limits his snaps, I believe Kyle Shanahan will find ways to get Kittle involved near the goal line.

The Rams will have plenty to worry about with Christian McCaffrey, Mike Evans and the rest of San Francisco’s offensive weapons. That could create an opportunity for Kittle to find a matchup he can exploit.

2. Davante Adams and Puka Nacua Are Both Held Under 100 Receiving Yards

The Rams have one of the most dangerous receiving combinations in the NFL with Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, and Matthew Stafford has plenty of experience getting the football to his playmakers.

But I don’t believe either receiver reaches 100 yards tonight.

San Francisco’s goal should be simple: don’t let the Rams’ receivers take over the game.

Nacua is coming off a monster 2025 season in which he recorded 129 receptions for 1,715 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Adams gives Stafford another elite target.

The 49ers don’t necessarily have to completely shut down the Rams’ passing attack. They simply need to prevent the big plays and force Stafford to consistently work underneath.

Bold prediction: Adams finishes under 100 yards and Nacua finishes under 100 yards.

3. The 49ers Outperform the Rams’ Defense

This may be my biggest bold prediction.

The Rams made major additions to their defense this offseason, most notably bringing in Myles Garrett, and they are expected to have one of the most intimidating defensive units in the league. Aaron Donald is also back with the team, although he will not play in tonight’s opener.

But I believe San Francisco’s offense will do enough to win the battle.

Brock Purdy has plenty of weapons around him, and the 49ers have the versatility to attack the Rams in multiple ways. McCaffrey can force the defense to commit extra attention to the running game, while Evans, Kittle and the rest of the receiving corps create matchup problems.

The Rams’ defense will have its moments, but I expect San Francisco to make the bigger plays when it matters most.

My Final Prediction

The Rams are the favorites, and there are plenty of reasons to believe Los Angeles can win this game. But the 49ers have had more time to adjust to the Australian time zone, arriving more than a week before the game, while the Rams traveled much later.

I believe that preparation, combined with San Francisco’s defensive approach, gives the 49ers an edge.
