Duff Is Making Rutgers’ Record Almost Irrelevant

KJ Duff entered September with Second Team All-Big Ten honors and then produced 196 yards and three touchdowns against UMass. Eight days later at Boston College, he added eight catches for 137 yards and two more scores, giving him 333 yards and five touchdowns through Rutgers’ 0-2 start. The losses keep some attention on the team’s problems, but the individual tape is difficult to dismiss: Duff is winning downfield, finishing contested catches and generating explosives without a dominant passing offense around him. A first-round conversation becomes realistic if those traits survive Big Ten coverage.

Draft stock and betting prices do not move on the same timetable. Rutgers lost 37-21 to UMass while Duff produced 196 yards, a clean example of an individual prospect rising while his team’s market value falls. Dashawn Spears does not have the same statistical volume as Duff or Lubin, but that makes his 2026 season especially important for his draft stock. The LSU safety played 255 defensive snaps in 2025, finishing with 29 tackles, two pass breakups, and two interceptions, both of which came in the 20-10 win over Florida, including a 58-yard pick-six. At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, Spears has the size to handle matchup duties near the box without being confined to that role. More experience against SEC route combinations should reveal whether his instincts and tackling angles are as strong as his physical tools suggest.

Pegan’s Transfer Created the Right Kind of Test

Braden Pegan’s case is built on a jump in competition rather than a sudden statistical spike. He caught 60 passes for 926 yards and five touchdowns at Utah State in 2025, earned First Team All-Mountain West honors, then moved to Utah and opened 2026 with four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown against Idaho while adding a 12-yard rushing score. Utah followed that performance by beating Arkansas 43-10 on September 12, giving Pegan early exposure to SEC defensive personnel. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior now needs repeated production against Big 12 corners to move from intriguing prospect toward the first-round fringe.

October Will Kill Some of These Cases

September creates names; October creates evidence. Maiava gets Oregon and later Ohio State, Pegan reaches Big 12 play at Iowa State on September 26, while Duff still has a full Big Ten schedule in front of him. Lubin and Spears will see better offensive lines and more sophisticated protection plans as conference play deepens.
