The Pawnee Heights High School community in Kansas is mourning the loss of a student-athlete who died Tuesday evening after collapsing during football practice.

The tragic incident happened at Pawnee Heights High School in Rozel, where emergency responders were called to the school at approximately 8:30 p.m. after a football player collapsed on the field.

According to Pawnee County dispatch audio, CPR was being performed on the player when first responders were requested at the school.

Pawnee Heights Principal Tina Vondracek confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the student had died. His name has not yet been released.

Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett said the Pawnee County Sheriff contacted him at approximately 9 p.m. to report that emergency medical personnel had responded to the football practice after the teenager collapsed. Despite efforts to save him, medical personnel were unable to revive him at the scene.

A deputy with the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office said the teenager’s death was the result of a medical emergency.

The heartbreaking news has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the Pawnee Heights community, where teammates, coaches, teachers, classmates and family members are now facing the unimaginable loss of a young person with so much life ahead of him.
