San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from multiple injuries sustained in a serious car accident earlier this month that will limit his involvement as the team begins training camp.

According to reports, Shanahan was involved in a collision with an SUV near his Northern California home on July 14. The accident left the 45-year-old coach with a broken nose, three broken ribs, a fractured hand, more than 40 stitches to his face, and a severe concussion.

Despite the extent of his injuries, Shanahan has made steady progress in his recovery. However, he continues to experience lingering symptoms from the concussion, prompting the organization to ease him back into his coaching responsibilities.

General manager John Lynch said Saturday that assistant head coach Chris Foerster will temporarily take on some of Shanahan’s day-to-day duties while the head coach continues to recover. Lynch noted that the coaching staff will share responsibilities until Shanahan is medically cleared to fully resume his role.

Although there is no formal concussion protocol for NFL coaches or staff members, Lynch said Shanahan will follow a recovery process similar to what players undergo before returning to full participation.

The 49ers remain optimistic that Shanahan will be back on the sidelines once he has fully recovered, with the organization prioritizing his long-term health as preparations for the 2026 season get underway.

Shanahan, who has guided the 49ers to multiple NFC Championship Game appearances and Super Bowl contention during his tenure, is expected to remain involved with the team as his condition allows while continuing his rehabilitation.
