A California High School community continues to mourn the tragic loss of 15-year-old football player Aziel Zacapala after an 18-year-old man was formally charged in connection with his death.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Zacapala was fatally stabbed around 1 p.m. on July 10 in the 9700 block of Fern Street. Investigators said the stabbing occurred during a fight that also left two of Zacapala’s friends with stab wounds. Both survived the incident.

Authorities announced that Jonathan Castelan, 18, of South El Monte, was arrested on July 20 on suspicion of murder. During a court appearance on July 22, Castelan pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon, according to court records.

As the criminal case moves through the legal system, those who knew Zacapala are remembering a teenager whose life was filled with promise both on and off the football field.

Friends and family described Zacapala as someone who always wore an infectious smile and deeply cared about the people around him. His love for football was evident, and he dreamed of one day playing professionally.

The rising sophomore was just weeks away from beginning the 2026 football season with Rosemead High School’s varsity team after earning playing time as a freshman the previous season. Coaches, teammates, and classmates have remembered him as a hardworking athlete who embraced every opportunity to improve and represent his school.

His death has left an enormous void in the Rosemead High School community, where teammates, friends, and loved ones continue to honor his memory while seeking justice.

The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors pursue charges against Castelan.
