Former Eastern Illinois University football player Keshawn Lewis-Hunt died after being shot multiple times during a shooting in Harvey, Illinois, earlier this week. He was 20 years old.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Lewis-Hunt succumbed to his injuries following the July 6 shooting. Eastern Illinois University released a statement expressing sadness over the loss of the former Panther student-athlete.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Keshawn’s family, friends, teammates and all who knew him, and the University is providing support and resources to those impacted by this loss. Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, the University will have no further comment,” the university said.

According to the City of Harvey, police responded to the 16000 block of Ashland Avenue around 1:17 a.m. on July 6 after receiving reports of a shooting. Officers found Lewis-Hunt suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said several other individuals were also injured in the shooting and transported themselves to the hospital for treatment. Investigators do not currently believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

WGN reported that the shooting stemmed from a fight that broke out at a house party. The suspect remains at large, and the investigation is ongoing.

Remembering Lewis-Hunt

Lewis-Hunt redshirted the 2024 season at Eastern Illinois and was not listed on the program’s roster for the 2025 or 2026 seasons.

Before joining the Panthers, he starred at Morgan Park High School where he earned two-time All-Chicago Public League honors. His teams advanced to the IHSA Class 5A state quarterfinals during both his junior and senior years.

Lewis-Hunt’s death has left the Eastern Illinois community mourning the loss of a young athlete remembered for his accomplishments on the field and the impact he made on those around him.
