Kentucky football player’s cause of death has been revealed

The cause of death for University of Kentucky defensive lineman Nic Smith has been officially determined.
According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, Smith, 20, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on June 8.
The former Kentucky football player was found in a residence hall on the university’s campus. A statement released by University of Kentucky spokesperson Jay Blanton said the University of Kentucky Police Department received a call at approximately 10:03 a.m. reporting that a student had been found deceased.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Smith’s cause of death and listed his time of death as 10:40 a.m. on June 8.
At the time of Smith’s death, university officials stated that an initial investigation showed no indication of foul play. Authorities continue to handle the matter in accordance with standard procedures.
Smith was entering his collegiate career as a defensive lineman for the Kentucky football program and was regarded as a promising young athlete.
