Alabama Football Player Arrested on Sodomy Charges

A walk-on member of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team has been arrested on a sexual assault charge involving a juvenile female, according to authorities in Calhoun County, Alabama.

Player Arrested After Grand Jury Indictment

Antonio Ross, 19, a freshman defensive back for Alabama, was arrested Monday at a home in Weaver after being indicted by a Calhoun County grand jury on a charge of second-degree sodomy.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said Ross was booked into the Calhoun County Jail and released a short time later on a $50,000 bond.

The investigation began after the alleged incident was reported to the Anniston Police Department. Authorities said the juvenile victim, whose name and age have not been released, was interviewed at the Calhoun County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Alabama Removes Ross From Program

The University of Alabama confirmed Ross is no longer with the football team.

“Tonio Ross is no longer part of the program and has been removed from campus,” the university said in a statement.

Ross did not see game action during Alabama’s first two games of the season. He had joined the program as a walk-on defensive back.

Second-degree sodomy in Alabama generally involves sexual acts with someone who is under the age of legal consent or unable to consent under state law.

The case remains under investigation by local authorities.
