What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
It kind of happened by chance my family like allowed me to sign up for football in first grade summer going into the second grade it was originally going to be for flag and I ended up being too heavy so I ended up having to go to tackle and my first time I’m putting on my pads and stuff it felt kind of weird. You know i was brand new to it and had no idea what to expect and as soon as I put the pads on it was something that I fell in love with real quick being able to hit people and being able to play as a team and I learned this as my career went on from that point but a lot of the lessons I’ve learned through playing football has helped me in life tremendously
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
Definitely being able to play with the teams I’ve been on from pee wee football to middle school to high school to college, the two teams I’ve been on in college. From the memories in the locker room to scoring touchdowns in stadiums to moments in the meeting rooms to being able to meet a lot of great people and just the relationships I’ve built over time with teammates and coaches and just connections through the football world.
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?
I think JJ Watt would be my answer just because obviously he is a great player and I think he’s a very funny guy and he does a lot of great things in his community and it would be cool to learn from him through his experiences and what he’s been through.
What is your favorite offensive scheme and why?
My favorite offensive scheme is power and counter, especially for me when I’m the pulling guard just because that is my favorite thing to do and I think that’s something in my skill set that I can show to a lot of people on film that I could do well.
What stands out about your film the most?
I think my physicality, the nature of how I play with how physical I am, my versatility with being able to play both guards and center. It’s not always shown on film, but I love to celebrate my teammates and their accomplishments whether it’s because I could’ve contributed for a block and they scored a touchdown or the defense and they make a play like it always brings me joy to see my teammates succeed. And I think the film brings out my physicality, like I said, my versatility and how hard I play the effort that I have through the whistles and also for how I can read and the knowledge that I have for the game as well. I can kind of predict what happens, depending on different keys and things that I see.
What should we know about Dylan Barrett the person?
I’m interested in cars, working on cars and trucks like engines. I’ve done a lot of work on teammates’ cars, my truck and things and then just someone that is trustworthy, loyal, and honest.
What do you love the most about the game of football?
The team aspect number one, how you can bring a lot of people from a bunch of different backgrounds and put them all together towards the common goal. I think that is one of the coolest things and I think that’s what the world is lacking at times. That still holds true in the sport of football.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
I would say James Neal, he was my tackle that I played with pretty much the most out of my time at Iowa State and he’s a guy that’s athletic, trustworthy, great communicator and someone that when I played next to him, I knew he was going do his job whether that’s with me in the same block or if we’re on different blocks like I know what he’s going to do and he knows what I’m going to do and our communication was very sound.
