Virginia Football Player Arrested & Charged with Rape and Abduction

A former University of Virginia football player has been arrested and charged in connection with a reported sexual assault in Albemarle County.
According to the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD), 22-year-old Jahmal Edrine was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of rape and one count of abduction. The charges stem from an investigation that began on August 25, after a victim reported being sexually assaulted the previous day.
Edrine enrolled at the University of Virginia in January and played for the Cavaliers during the most recent football season. UVA officials confirmed to Cville Right Now that they are aware of the situation and that Edrine is no longer enrolled as a student at the university.
A transfer from Purdue, Edrine recorded 46 receptions for 564 yards and one touchdown for Virginia. He was part of a Cavaliers team that won a program-record 11 games during the season.
Authorities say Edrine is currently being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact Detective Ricci with ACPD’s Criminal Investigations Division at 434-296-5807.
All charges are allegations, and Edrine is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
