This season, he has 34 catches, 562 pass-catching yards, and 5 touchdowns in eight matches. For context, this is the most of any wide receiver first-year player in the NFL right now.
Analysts believe that Egbuka averaging over 70 yards in every game for Tampa Bay makes him a solid contender for the OROY award. And if he retains his current form, he could get the top ROTY award.
Here’s what the Buccaneers’ QB (Baker Mayfield) thinks about Egbuka: “He’s well-rounded and not just in football, in life. I think he’s grounded, and I think he’s just genuine in everything he does. He’s intentional. You just don’t see that often, and especially as a rookie with the talent that he has, you really don’t see it often.”
2. Abdul Carter, Edge, New York Giants
The Giants drafting Abdul Carter is seen as a stroke of genius. Week in, week out, the edge rusher is on the gridiron, making life difficult for the opposing team’s QB. Just this season, he’s had 11 solo tackles, 11 assists, 0.5 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery.
What makes Cartel special is how quickly he’s been able to adapt to the pace of the NFL. While other debutants in his position might have a slow start, he’s come out with a bang. He wriggles past the offensive line like no man’s business to mount pressure on the quarterback.
Carter’s so confident in himself that he made this post on Instagram before taking a first NFL snap: “Year 1. I ain’t no rookie been playing this game for a long time. Ball is ball.”
With these attributes, it’s no surprise DROY odds place him in the top spot. He’s so good that NFL teams now make plans that revolve around stopping him before games.
3. Tyler Warren, TE, Indianapolis Colts
Warren is redefining how NFL teams and fans look at newcomer tight ends. The Indianapolis Colts got him for his catching and blocking capabilities. But he’s exceeding expectations. Currently, Colts tight end Tyler Warren is playing a major role for the team’s offense.
In just 9 games, he’s gotten 42 catches for 518 receiving yards and has scored four touchdowns. Warren is great at finding open spaces. As such, it’s no surprise that Daniel Jones (Colts QB) trusts him to make catches and pick up extra yards that can result in first downs. His consistency per game has made him a favorite among players and the Colts’ faithful.
With his all-around game, Warren makes a strong case for being the best rookie in his position. If he continues to put up stellar performances each week, he could get over 1,200 yards before the regular season ends.
4. Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Carolina Panthers
This wide receiver was the eighth pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, and it’s easy to see why. He has a frame that lets him shake off defenders. Also, he can catch passes in positions you never deemed possible. In nine games, McMillan has had 41 catches for 558 yards and has scored 2 touchdowns.
From week 1, McMillan has shown that he’s got the talent of an amazing wide receiver. Whenever he has the ball in his grasp, Panthers fans have something to cheer about. Although Egbuka edges ahead in the OROY conversation, McMillan has what it takes to pull ahead if he gets consistent service from his debutant quarterback, Bryce Young.
5. Cam Skattebo, RB, New York Giants
Cam Skattebo had to be one of the best newcomer running backs in the past few years. His intense running style has seen him become the #1 RB choice for the Giants. He doesn’t care what’s ahead, he runs through it with his head held high. Drafted 105th overall in the 2025 draft, Skattebo is one of the biggest surprises this year. Unfortunately, his year came to an end with a massive injury.
Through eight games however, he’s had 101 carries for 410 rushing yards and has scored 7 touchdowns. Only Ashton Jeanty of the Las Vegas Raiders (487 yards), Quinshon Judkins of the Cleveland Browns (486 yards), and Jacory Croskey-Merritt (440 yards) had more rushing yards than Skattebo this season.
While Skattebo might not lead when it comes to stats, his impact for the Giants was notable. However, he sustained a bad injury in the team’s week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. It remains to be seen if he’ll retain his running style when he gets back.
