Chicago Bears “Houdini” Themselves into First Place in NFC North

Tuesday Morning Quarterback - Vikings 27 - Bears 24: A disgruntled Bears fan perspective
Chicago Bears “Houdini” Themselves into First Place in NFC North

The Bears eeked out another win that they would have usually lost. By my count, that’s five games that they have somehow snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. They are now 7-3, and suddenly leading the NFC North.

Houdini #1 – Week 4. Bears 25 – Raiders 24 Josh Blackwell blocks what would have been a Raiders game-winning field goal with 33 seconds remaining.

Houdini #2 – Week 5. Bears 25 – Commanders 24 On an emotional day, when the Bears lost the great Dick Butkus, the offense did just enough to hang on for the win, by the same score as last week.

Houdini #3 – Week 8. Bears 47 – Bengals 42 – Ben Johnson pulled out his bag of tricks, as D.J. Moore hit Caleb Williams in the end zone on a Philly Special, and Tyson Bagent hit Williams on a double pass for a 20-yard gain. But the Bears’ defense collapsed late, allowing 15 points in less than a minute. Caleb Williams hit Colston Loveland in the final seconds, who spun around 2 Cincy defenders for the game-winning TD.

Houdini #4 – Week 9. Bears 24 – Giants 20 – The Bears defense made a crucial stop late, and the Giants lost starting QB Jaxson Dart to a concussion. The Bears scored two late touchdowns to turn a 20-10 deficit into a come-from-behind victory.

Houdini #5 – Week 10. Bears 19 – Vikings 17 – The Bears allowed Minnesota to hang around, and almost paid for it. Devin Duvernay’s 56-yard kickoff return set up the Bears in the final minute, as kicker Cairo Santos made amends for his earlier missed field goal to seal the deal.

The Bears host the Steelers next Sunday. Aaron Rodgers has a broken bone in his left wrist. It’s his non-throwing hand, so we will see whether he plays or not. As a Bears fan who suffered through two decades of futility vs. Brett Favre, then Rodgers, I would love to see the Bears exact some revenge. I must admit, however, that I would rather see the Bears at 8-3 than see Rodgers given another opportunity to torch us before we have to face Philly and the hated Packers on the road.
