New Orleans parent arrested after alleged assault on football coach with a box cutter

New Orleans police have arrested the father of a Warren Easton High School football player after he allegedly assaulted and threatened his son’s coach following practice last month.

Bradley Lewis, 35, was booked Monday (Sept. 8) into the Orleans Justice Center on charges including battery of a school teacher, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property, and disturbing the peace.

Court records show the situation began on Aug. 13, when a Warren Easton coach disciplined Lewis’ son after the player reportedly refused instructions, cursed at the coach, and left the field without permission. The following day, the player’s mother requested a meeting with coaches. Both sides agreed the student would accept punishment by running laps and follow directions moving forward. However, police say the player refused to serve the punishment.

According to the arrest affidavit, later that day Lewis confronted one of the coaches outside the locker room. Players tried to intervene, but Lewis allegedly slapped the coach in the face, pulled out a box cutter, and threatened to kill him. During the altercation, the coach fell onto a bench and suffered two cracked ribs.

Investigators believe the student called his father to the school to confront the coach. Lewis was later located and arrested.

At a bond hearing, Lewis’ attorney, Ralph Steward, argued his client acted in self-defense. He also noted that Lewis’ son has since transferred to another school. Magistrate Commissioner Jonathan Friedman set Lewis’ bond at $7,000.
