A South Carolina community is mourning the loss of a promising young athlete after a weekend shooting claimed the life of 18-year-old Mycheal Edwards-Wallace, an incoming freshman football player at Newberry College.

According to reports, Edwards-Wallace and 16-year-old Edwin Cooper were both shot and killed on Sunday at an apartment complex in Kingstree, South Carolina. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Edwards-Wallace was a standout at Kingstree High School, where he recently graduated. A gifted athlete with a bright future ahead of him, he earned numerous accolades during his high school career, including all-state, all-area, and all-region honors. He also represented South Carolina in the prestigious Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, showcasing his talent among the region’s top football prospects.

He had recently committed to Newberry College and was preparing to begin his collegiate football journey with the Wolves this fall.

Newberry head coach Todd Knight expressed the program’s heartbreak in a statement:

“Our hearts go out to his family. It’s such a tragedy for a talented young man to be struck down at a young age. He was a good student and a great young man with a terrific personality and a bright future. We were really excited to have him as a part of our team. He will always be a part of our Newberry family.”

The tragic loss of Edwards-Wallace has left a void in both the local community and the Newberry football family. His memory will live on through those who knew him and the impact he made in such a short time.
