Five College Football Players Who Shined in Week 1

The opening weekend of the college football season didn’t disappoint, delivering upsets, dominant team wins, and breakout individual performances. Several stars wasted no time making their mark, setting the tone for what could be memorable seasons. Here are five players who stood out in Week 1:
1. Tommy Castellanos, QB, Florida State
Facing Alabama’s defense is no small task, but Castellanos played fearless football in Florida State’s 31–17 win. The dynamic quarterback piled up 230 rushing yards while nearly averaging five yards per carry, carving up the Crimson Tide with Gus Malzahn’s new-look offense. His toughness and creativity made him the difference in a statement victory for the Seminoles.
2. Julian Sayin, QB, Ohio State
The freshman made his Buckeyes debut against Texas and looked poised beyond his years. Sayin didn’t need to put up monster numbers thanks to OSU’s stifling defense, but he was sharp and efficient, completing 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Against Arch Manning and a hyped Longhorns team, Sayin proved Ohio State has its quarterback of the future.
3. Devon Dampier, QB, Utah
The Utes unleashed their new dual-threat playmaker against UCLA, and Dampier delivered a dazzling performance. The New Mexico transfer threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 87 yards scoring once. His ability to hurt defenses in multiple ways gave Utah a balanced, explosive attack that left the Bruins with no answers in a 43–10 rout.
4. Harold Perkins, DL, LSU
Perkins finished the night with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack, spearheading a unit that held Clemson under 270 yards of total offense and forced seven drives to end in punts or turnovers. His speed off the edge and ability to close on ball carriers made life miserable for Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik, who never found a rhythm.
5. Carson Beck, QB, Miami
The Georgia transfer showed poise in a pressure-packed debut for the Hurricanes, leading Miami to a 27–24 win over Notre Dame. After the Irish tied the game late, Beck marched the Canes into field-goal range, setting up kicker Carter Davis for the game-winning 47-yarder. Beck’s steady leadership was the difference in a game that could define Miami’s season.
