Texas High School Football Player Dies After Heat Exhaustion During Football Practice

A Lancaster High School sophomore, Preston Malone III, tragically passed away on Wednesday morning, two days after experiencing a medical emergency during football practice. The 15-year-old was undergoing conditioning drills on Monday afternoon when he reported feeling unwell, prompting coaches to take immediate action.
Recognizing signs of heat exhaustion, including Malone not perspiring during 60-yard sprints, coaches followed proper UIL heat safety protocols. Malone’s temperature was measured at 104°F before being placed in a cold tub to lower his body temperature. By the time emergency responders arrived, it had dropped to 102°F.
Malone was then transported to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas for further treatment. Although doctors initially saw signs of improvement, his condition worsened, and he passed away on Wednesday morning. His family confirmed that he suffered a heat stroke during practice, which later led to a heart attack at the hospital.
Preston Malone III was a standout sophomore on the junior varsity football team and had been accepted into Lancaster High’s early college program. The Lancaster ISD community is mourning the loss of the young athlete, with district officials expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event.
The district followed all proper safety procedures during the incident, and they are offering counseling services to students and staff affected by Malone’s passing.
