New Jersey Star HS Football Player Xyere Brooks was Shot and Killed
Xyere Brooks had several major football programs looking at him. He was a talent on the football field and had the attention of Rutgers and Syracuse as a Sophomore.
Unfortunately, those dreams were cut short this past week. The city is suffering the heartbreaking loss of the 16-year-old rising football star whose life was cut short in a tragic shooting last week.
Brooks, a sophomore at KIPP High School in Camden, was remembered by loved ones as a gifted athlete and a kind-hearted teen who left a lasting impression on those who knew him. Known for his talent on the football field, his death has sent shockwaves through the community.
According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Friday inside an apartment on the 1500 block of Thorne Street. Brooks had the day off from school and was spending time at a friend’s home when the incident occurred. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital but passed away two hours later.
Authorities say several juveniles were inside the apartment when the gun was fired. Investigators are still working to determine who owned the weapon and what led up to the shooting.
Family members believe the shooting was accidental.
Xyere’s brother Manazh Tompkins made a statement on saying
“She put the gun to his head, and I guess she didn’t expect it to go off, to make a long story short, the gun went off on my brother, and he’s no longer here with us.”
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the devastating loss of a young life full of promise. Friends, classmates, and coaches have begun to share memories and tributes, honoring Brooks’ bright spirit and the potential that will never be fully realized.
Please keep the Brooks family in your prayers.
