Pittman’s Pocket: Draft Day: A Historic Opportunity for HBCU Talent

It’s Draft Day number 2, and here at Draft Diamonds, excitement is in the air. But alongside our enthusiasm, there’s an important message we want to share.

Today marks a pivotal moment for former HBCU players such as Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Carson Vinson, Bhayshul Tuten, Robert McDaniel, Irv Mulligan, Kendall Bohler, and more. These athletes represent the immense potential and talent that HBCUs continue to produce. In fact, this draft class is a testament to the fact that HBCUs still have the power to break through, with at least two players potentially defying the odds set by last year’s disappointing statistic of zero drafted HBCU players.

This draft is an opportunity to shift the narrative and bring much-needed attention to the incredible talent within HBCUs. Imagine if the NFL could connect the past legends of HBCU football—such as Walter Payton—to the future stars rising from these schools today. Take, for example, Irv Mulligan, who shattered Payton’s rushing record at Jackson State but was overlooked while players like Ashton Jeanty from Boise State gained more recognition. Irv Mulligan should have been on that stage, and it’s time to ensure that future HBCU athletes get their shot.

Today, let’s hope this draft sets a new precedent, one where HBCU players are not just given a chance, but actively sought after. This could be the beginning of a brighter future for HBCU talent in the NFL.

Let’s make it happen.
