Pittman’s Pocket: The NFL Combine and HBCU Combine Perspective

The 2025 NFL Combine and HBCU Combine have officially concluded, offering valuable insights into the evolving landscape of HBCU representation in professional football.
Sports Illustrated HBCU writer KY Mosley recently highlighted that four former HBCU players participated in this year’s NFL Combine: former Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, along with Shedeur Sanders, Carson Vinson, and Bhayshul Tuten.
Additionally, 17 players from the HBCU Combine and Legacy Bowl received NFL Draft grades, showcasing their potential to transition from New Orleans to Indianapolis. However, of the six players who earned draft grades, only one ultimately secured a spot at the NFL Combine, while the rest participated solely in the All-Star circuit.
The increasing prominence of HBCU recruiting is evident in this year’s draft class, demonstrating significant progress. But is there more to be done? Absolutely. If six HBCU prospects received draft grades, all should have the opportunity to showcase their talent on the biggest stage—the NFL Combine.
