Top Rated Transfer Portal Prospect Arrested in Texas for Theft

The top rated transfer portal wide receiver Johntay Cook II is currently in custody at the Tarrant County Jail following his arrest early Tuesday morning. Cook, a former 4-start prospect, faces charges of theft of property between $100 and $750, as well as interference with public duties.
Details surrounding the arrest remain scarce, but according to the Tarrant County Corrections Center website, a hearing before a magistrate judge was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office has directed inquiries to the Fort Worth Police Department for further information, though specifics on the incident have yet to be disclosed.
Cook, a standout wide receiver from DeSoto High School, gained attention during his time at the University of Texas. After two seasons with the Longhorns, he transferred to the University of Washington midway through the 2024 season, but ultimately decided to re-enter the transfer portal after a brief stint in Seattle.
As of now, Cook holds the top spot in 247Sports’ Transfer Rankings, but he remains without a new team, with potential suitors closely monitoring his situation. The arrest could potentially impact his recruitment, but with his undeniable talent, many programs may still be willing to overlook this recent incident.
