What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?

As an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, I was eager to learn English
quickly and adapt to a new culture. Joining a team seemed like the best way to immerse
myself since all the kids spoke English. That experience not only helped me learn the
language but also introduced me to football, a sport where hard work truly pays off. I
fell in love with the game because it rewards effort, discipline, and determination, and
that resonated deeply with me.

What are your favorite moments from your football life?

Some of my favorite moments include earning my first start in college, making
game-changing plays that helped my team win, and the relationships I’ve built with my
teammates along the way. Transferring to the University of Akron and contributing in my
final year was also special, it showed me the power of adaptability and growth.

What are you looking to achieve as a football player going forward?

As someone who came to this country seeking opportunity, my dream has always been to
make an impact at the highest level, not just as a player, but as a role model. I want to
represent hard work, resilience, and determination on the field, contributing to a winning
culture and pushing myself to new heights. Beyond that, I want to use my platform to
inspire kids back home in Congo and around the world, showing them that no dream is
too big when you work for it.

If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?

Without a doubt, I’d choose Aaron Donald. He’s a master of his craft and the definition of
dominance on the defensive line. What I admire most about him is his relentless work
ethic and his mindset to be the best, every single day. Spending even one day with
someone like him would be an opportunity to learn how he prepares, how he stays
motivated, and how he approaches the game with such passion.

Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?

My mom inspires me the most. When we immigrated from Congo, my dad was very sick,
and she had to carry the weight of keeping our family together in a completely new
country. She gave up so much to give us a chance at a better life, and her strength, faith,
and resilience have always been my foundation. Watching her navigate those challenges
with grace and determination taught me that no obstacle is too big to overcome. She’s the
reason I keep pushing forward every day, to make her proud and honor everything she’s
sacrificed for us.

What is your favorite defensive scheme and why?

I don’t have a specific preference when it comes to schemes because I’ve played all over
the defensive line, and I’ll do whatever it takes to help the team win. Whether it’s rushing
the passer, stopping the run, or setting the edge, I’m ready to adapt and make an impact
wherever I’m needed. My focus is on being versatile and effective in any system, as long
as it benefits the team.

What should we know about Nathan Kapongo the person?

I’m a man who deeply values hard work, humility, and community. I’m driven by my
faith, my family, and the desire to make a positive impact both on and off the field. Off
the field, I’m passionate about helping others, exploring new challenges, and constantly
growing as a person. I also love to cook and experiment with different cuisines, it’s one
of my favorite ways to unwind. On top of that, I’m a big fan of anime, especially shows
like Demon Slayer, Dragon Ball, and Naruto. At my core, I believe in giving my all in
everything I do and lifting up those around me.

What stands out about your film the most?

What stands out is my explosiveness off the snap, my ability to disrupt plays in the
backfield, and my versatility across the defensive line. I’m a playmaker who loves
running to the ball and taking pride in stopping the run. Whether it’s shutting down the
ground game or rushing the passer, I bring relentless energy and a physical presence that
offenses have to account for. I pride myself on being consistent, disciplined, and always
playing with maximum effort.

How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?

Challenges are part of life, and I see them as opportunities to grow stronger. On the field,
I focus on preparation and trusting the process, leaning on my training and my
teammates. Off the field, I rely on my faith, my family’s support, and my belief that every
obstacle is a step toward achieving something greater. I’ve faced adversity before, and
each time, it’s shaped me into the person I am today.

What would a team get in a player like you?

A team would get a relentless competitor and a team-first player who will do whatever it
takes to help the organization succeed. I bring passion, discipline, and leadership, both on
and off the field. I’m also a fun person who brings life and energy to those around
me, whether it’s in the locker room, on the field, or just hanging out. Most importantly,
I’m someone who will never stop working to improve, whether it’s in the film room, on
the practice field, or in the weight room.

What do you love the most about the game of football?

I love everything about football, but what I cherish most is the brotherhood it creates.
Football is more than just a game, it’s a way to grow as a person, to learn about
sacrifice, discipline, and resilience. I love the grind, the competition, and the feeling of
coming together with a team to achieve something bigger than yourself.

Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?

Randall Harris and Heron Maurisseau are the most underrated players I’ve ever played with.
Neither of them always got the spotlight, but their work ethic, consistency, and leadership were
unmatched. They showed up every single day, put in the work, and made everyone around them
better. Whether it was in practice or on game day, they were always pushing themselves and they’re
teammates to elevate their game. It’s players like them who remind you that football isn’t just
about the stats, it’s about heart, dedication, and doing whatever it takes for the team to succeed.
