The Newberry community is heartbroken following the tragic death of Malachi Lancaster, a senior at Newberry High School and a standout football player, who was fatally injured in a hunting accident on Sunday.

According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, the 18-year-old was shot off Williston Road, just south of Gainesville, in what 911 callers described as a hunting accident.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the Sheriff’s Office has not yet released additional details.

Malachi’s vibrant spirit and leadership will forever be cherished by the Newberry community.
