Patriots Rookie Quarterback Drake Maye expectations vs Jacksonville Jaguars
Written by Karver Jordan
After a good showing vs the Houston Texans where Maye completed 20 of his 33 passes (66% Completion Percentage) for 243 yards with three touchdown passes and two interceptions, on the ground Maye recorded Five carries for 38 yards – Maye led the team in rushing yards. Overall the rookie quarterback had a very promising showing, missed a few throws; however, he bounced back after the misses and delivered great balls.
Maye found Kayshon Boutte for his first touchdown, secondly found Hunter Henry, and then found fan favorite DeMario “Pop” Douglas for his third touchdown of the game.
Heading into the primetime match between the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars here are some key ideas to know:
Both teams are 1 – 5 on the year
Jacksonville Jaguars are 32nd in passing yards allowed (276.7 yards per game) | 14 passing touchdowns allowed so far this season.
The New England Patriots did very solid in the air vs the Houston Texans who are ranked fourth in the league with only allowing 163.2 passing yards per game this season. Expect Drake Maye and Alex Van Pelt the Patriots Offensive Coordinator to draw up some deep shot plays. Players to watch in this game for targets are DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Hunter Henry, and someone who has been quiet so far this season is Kendrick Bourne. The veteran wide receiver hasn’t seen the field as much as Patriot fans would like, this week I expect a lot more of Bourne.
Patriots Keys to win this game:
Screens could turn into big gains with correct timing
- If Antonio Gibson can get decent blocking up front on a screen, expect him to break one for a few yards.
Motion Wide Receivers / Tight ends
- Jaguars struggled off Chicago Bears motion plays and got confused by misdirection
Miscommunications lead to Tight ends beating coverage
- Feed Hunter Henry, Jaguars allowed Bears tight end Cole Kmet to grab five receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Jaguars Pass rush encourages Williams to run
- Struggled against Caleb Williams rushing ability, four carries for 56 yards.
Run Drake Run
- Run Drake Maye, get the rookie into space with read options.
The New England Patriots will face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 9:30 AM EST on NFL Network for their primetime showdown in England.
