Virginia Union running back Jada Byers came into the Panthers’ week one matchup against Kentucky State with an impressive 47 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons. In the 69-7 victory over Kentucky State, Byers surpassed the 50-touchdown mark.

The senior running back, who was named to the preseason All-CIAA first team and is a strong candidate for the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2024, showcased his talents by rushing for 211 yards and three touchdowns.

“He is a big part of what we do offensively,” said head coach Alvin Parker. “I’m glad Jada was able to put up the numbers he did. Jada is going to always do what Jada does.”

Byers led a dominant Panthers offense that gained over 600 yards in the win, averaging an impressive 15.1 yards per carry. He also contributed with a 20-yard reception. After a 2023 season where Byers rushed for over 1,186 yards, he is now within striking distance of the school record of 5,008 yards, set by Andrew Braxton. Byers is currently just 781 yards shy of breaking that record.

Throughout his career at VUU, Byers has played in 32 games, averaging 132 yards per game. At this pace, he is projected to break the record in the Panthers’ seventh game of the season at home against Lincoln University.

This weekend, Virginia Union travels to face the Hampton University Pirates, a Division I team coming off a loss to Morgan State. For VUU, this presents both a significant challenge and a major opportunity. Byers, who is likely already catching the attention of NFL scouts, could further boost his profile with a standout performance against the Pirates.
