Player Summary:
Senior. Starts at ILB. Marginal height but has a very athletic-looking frame to potentially hold more weight. Developed lower body and has a thick chest with a good core. Average as a run defender, average in pass coverage, below-average as a pass rusher. As a run defender he is average. Displays good instincts and flows to the ball nicely, takes good angles to the LOS. Can square up and stay parallel to the LOS and keep the play in front of him. Sticks his nose in a pile in short yardage. Can dent and knock back ballcarriers occasionally at the goal line. Is a marginal block shedder – struggles to use his length well to lock out and disengage. Key downside is lack of speed – is slow to pursue and chase, definitely lacks the speed and juice you’d expect out of a shorter LB. Doesn’t have much range. Lacks explosiveness and twitch especially as a pass rusher. Looks very tight-hipped and is slow to change direction. In coverage he is average. Can drop back and carry receivers in the short game. Didn’t display timing to break up passes. More of a drag-down tackler; would like to see him develop some thump. Speed/size ratio is a key issue; wish he was just faster.
Scheme Fit:
ILB
Power Statement:
Gaethan is a marginal linebacker prospect. He is average as a run defender, average in pass coverage and below-average as a pass rusher. I’d like to see how he develops as a senior.
