Player Summary:
Robert Longerbeam is a fifth-year senior CB with two seasons of starting experience entering the 2024 season, plus a single start in 2021. Has alignment versatility having taken a number of reps at outside corner and in the slot. Possesses solid height but poor weight for the position with a thin frame. An agile athlete with rapid change-of-direction skills and quick feet. Cuts receivers off by matching them step-for-step off the line and plays with a physical demeanor to jam them up. Uses a smooth off-pedal while maintaining his leverage off the line. Excellent twitch paired with great start-stop ability and hip fluidity to mirror shifty receivers in the slot. Considerable speed to match long striders downfield, and able to recover quickly when he falls out-of-phase. Solid plant-and-drive ability to sink his pads and break quickly. In deep zone coverage, he gains depth swiftly using bail technique while he scans the field. Utilizes a quick processor to recognize and react accordingly to different route concepts both underneath and from depth. Exceptional ability to play the receiver’s hands with his back to the quarterback. Assertive when breaking downhill, showing an eagerness to make tackles and finish plays. A willing contributor in run support who is not afraid to get dirty in the trenches. Marginal block destruction ability; he gets bullied by receivers on the perimeter and lacks the strength to shed efficiently. In the passing game, he will get beat by bigger receivers on the perimeter due to his lack of size and length. In man coverage, he drifts off too regularly and must do a better job closing space quicker to get back in-phase. While he is an aggressive and assertive tackler, his lack of strength makes it difficult to bring ball carriers to the ground.
Scheme Fit:
Aligns best as a nickel defender at the next level with the versatility to bump outside to cornerback when necessary. His athleticism, hip fluidity, and man coverage skills allow him to blanket shifty wide receivers from the slot.
Power Statement:
An undersized cornerback prospect with the athleticism, man coverage skills, assertiveness, and processing skills to be a viable nickel defender at the next level. While he has experience playing outside, he will have difficulties holding up outside against bigger receivers and will struggle to shed blocks when his name is called. Possesses the skill set and tools to succeed at the next level.
