Player Summary:
Two-year starter entering this season as a redshirt senior in his sixth season, primarily at right guard. His frame is on the lighter side compared to NFL guards. An adequate athlete who is solid pulling across the line of scrimmage but can be late to climb to the second level. Has good strength with a strong grip and average hand placement. In pass protection, he can get walked back and can be late to set his anchor, but shows above-average ability in passing off stunts and mirroring defenders. Good hand placement and footwork in pass protection, working his hands and feet together with a strong initial punch and powerful steps in his kick step. He’s a solid run blocker who uses his strength and tenacity to open up running lanes. Plays to the whistle and finishes blocks. Uses his strength in his hips and lower body to control reps in the running game. His first step is poor and lacks explosiveness. Even though he can adjust and regain the rep, he needs to find more power out of his stance.
Scheme Fit:
OG. Gap blocking scheme
Power Statement:
A solid run blocker and an adequate pass blocker who can improve by being quicker and more explosive out of his stance in both phases, as well as finding consistency in the passing game. For a slighter-framed guard, he plays tough and has above-average strength and a solid football IQ to locate his blocks when pulling and passing off defenders. With average technique and good strength, West overcomes the deficiencies in the passing game and poor first step.
