Pittman’s Pocket: HBCU Football games to watch on ESPN this season
The 2024-2025 football season is just three weeks away, and there are some key games and standout players to watch, especially among HBCU teams. Here are a few early contests featuring true freshmen and draft-eligible juniors and seniors to keep an eye on:
- August 29th on ESPN networks:
- Jackson State vs. ULM
- UAPB vs. Arkansas
- Alcorn State vs. UAB
- August 31st:
- Bethune-Cookman vs. USF
- Alabama A&M vs. Auburn
- Grambling State vs. ULL
HBCU coaches should consider playing their freshmen during these early games. These matchups will also provide a platform for juniors and seniors to showcase their talent against Power 5-8 teams.
The progress of HBCU talent is evident, and professional GMs, head scouts, and directors of scouting should no longer overlook these players. The blueprint for recognizing HBCU talent is clear, and it’s time for pro executives to acknowledge and act on it in this year’s draft class. Let’s hope they get it together this time.
