Florida Gators Football: What do you want to see from Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway?
The Gators bring back 15 of 22 starters from last season, including at the most important position in all of sports. For the first time in four years, Florida returns its starting quarterback in redshirt senior Graham Mertz, and adds one of the best young quarterbacks in the country.
The Florida Gators open up their spring practices this week. While they have a challenging schedule ahead in 2024 with a lot of questions regarding the season, one of their more stable positions is at the quarterback position.
Mertz isn’t receiving a lot of attention nationally this offseason, which is to be expected given last year’s record, but he was a very solid addition for the Gators.
He had a breakout season in 2023, throwing for a career-high 2,903 yards and 20 touchdowns while leading the SEC in completion percentage (72.9%) and fewest interceptions (3), all of which were tipped passes.
Then we have DJ Lagway, the 6-foot-2, 238-pound Texas native has dual-threat abilities Mertz lacks. Lagway potentially could provide a downfield passing threat Mertz was unable to muster in 2023. Among SEC schools, UF’s 14 completions of at least 30 yards were fewer than only hapless Mississippi State.
Let’s discuss what we want to see from Graham Mertz this spring as well as the highly touted incoming freshman DJ Lagway.
