The Los Angeles Chargers Dilemma at Pick Number 5

The Chargers situation in the 2024 draft reminds me of the Bengals’ situation in 2021.
The Bengals were projected to take Penei Sewell, the top offensive lineman in the draft. Offensive tackle was Cincinnati’s biggest need at the time, so it made perfect sense for them to spend a top 5 pick on their biggest hole in their roster.
However, another option presented itself. LSU standout prospect Ja’marr Chase was available and pairing up with his former college quarterback in Joe Burrow was sure to be production waiting to happen.
So, instead of selecting the safe roster needing Sewell, they selected Chase. We all know how well that worked out for them.
The Chargers are in a similar situation. Much like the Bengals, the top offensive lineman in the draft will be available in Joe Alt. However, another dynamic LSU receiver will also likely be available in Malik Nabers. Pairing him up with Herbert to fill the void caused by Keenan Allen and Mike Williams is a home run in my opinion.
Either way, the Chargers have a tough call with the fifth pick. However, I wouldn’t rule out a trade back either.
