Kyle Shanahan was convinced by Jed York’s father to draft Brock Purdy

Will Brock Purdy get past all the slander and win a Super Bowl as Mr. Irrelevant?
Will Brock Purdy get past all the slander and win a Super Bowl as Mr. Irrelevant?

The Super Bowl is quickly approaching and if Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers can some how beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs history would be written!

It was just a few years ago that Brock Purdy was the final pick in the NFL Draft. The San Francisco 49ers who used a high pick and traded up for Trey Lance in a previous draft had to make a choice to select the former Iowa State QB.

The wild thing is Kyle Shanahan really liked Purdy but almost didn’t select him because he felt the team had other needs.

Shanahan was persuaded by John York, the father of CEO Jed. Shanahan recently shared the story.

“I’m always trying to check myself on this stuff,” Shanahan shared. “The pick’s coming up and I remember [John] asking, ‘Who’s the best player out there?’ I go, ‘Well, there’s no doubt Purdy’s the best player.’ He goes, ‘Then what are we talking about?’ I was like, ‘Well, there’s other spots. Also, we might be able to get him as a free agent for $10,000 after the draft.’ Dr. York can’t believe it. He’s looking at me like, I don’t get why there’s discussion if you guys think he’s the best player.

“Then it gets closer. I’m also getting the feeling we’re not getting Purdy as a free agent because there are so many other teams who are going to try to sign him. He wasn’t coming to us. He’s told me since then he was signing somewhere else. I said in the room, ‘Let’s not risk it. This guy’s too good.'”

The 49ers are not favored to win, but if you bet on NFL games then you may want to consider the underdogs. Purdy has been getting badmouthed all month being called a game manager, having former players like Cam Newton saying he is not the tenth best player on his team.

Christian McCaffrey was asked this week what he thought about the two quarterback’s. He actually gave them both a good review.

“Yeah, Brock and Cam—they look alike, they play alike and I think there’s a lot of different similarities,” he said jokingly. “I think both of them have that underdog mentality at all times and both of them carry a big chip on their shoulder. Both great leaders . . . and winners.”

The 49ers are like David in the Bible. With Taylor Swift, the Chiefs, Mahomes and Andy Reid all being Goliath, there will be a huge uphill battle for the Niners to win. I think the Niners can get the win, and if they can get an early lead it could end up being a long day for Andy and the boys.
