Player Summary:

Junior.  Tall and long frame with room to add bulk.  Does a lot of things well but doesn’t excel in any particular area of the game – average v. run, average as a pass rusher, average in coverage.  As a run defender, he is average.  Displays good range and ability to roam.  Good chase/pursuit and has a high motor.  Good closing speed.  Key issue across the board is his inability to shed blocks; gets too easily neutralized one-on-one.  Needs to bend, play with leverage, and develop better use of hands to disengage off blocks and make tackles.  Has marginal instincts – needs to see and locate the ball better and show better read/react on the run.  As a pass rusher, he is marginal.  Displays good quickness as a blitzer, has shown ability to shoot through gaps, and takes good angles.  Gets neutralized however by running backs who are in pass protection; struggles to run through or get around them en route to the QB.  In pass coverage, he is average.  Can drop back and cover well especially when the play is in front of him, but fell once when asked to cover deep.  Needs to develop better ball skills and be more disruptive with his hands.  Athletic prospect – returned a fumble for a TD v. TXAM.

Scheme Fit:

LB in 3-4 or 4-3

Power Statement:

Asante is average in all areas of the game.  He doesn’t stand out in any particular area over the others.  He must learn to shed blocks better if he wants to improve his draft stock.  I think he should stay another year.
