Is the Transfer Portal worth it with only one year left for a small schooler?
I am watching small schoolers putting their names in the Transfer Portal every ten minutes on Twitter. Many kids are leaving their schools. They are being told they need to get film against tough competition. They are being told that they cannot make it from the small school they attend.
I have talked to kids who have already entered the portal. They have been getting offers. Some big school too! There are some getting major Power 5 offers, and that is amazing. I love that they are getting the offers, but with one year left you have a lot of prove.
I think many kids are thinking they have to go to the portal to improve their stock. If they do not play for a Missouri or an Alabama they wont get drafted. Well, I am here to tell you that is BS.
I am not trying to tell small schoolers not to leave, I am not saying it is a bad option, I am saying think about the situation.
Does it really matter what team you play on in college football? Does it matter if you were the running back at Alabama or the running back at UT-Martin? The production is what is going to matter. The film is what is going to matter. The prospect does not change, if you are a 6’1 running back with 4.4 speed and can catch out the backfield, and you have a 38-inch vertical and you have been dominating the FCS or D2, why do you have to leave?
James Robinson played at Illinois State and was the best damn running back in the country when it came to yards, and he would go on to have a nice career in the NFL.
Austin Ekeler from Western Colorado would go on to have a nice career, and he was a dog at the small school level.
There are many more too, it does not matter where you play. The NFL has a ton of small schoolers. On average, about 70 former D2 and D3 players compete in each NFL football season. That is just D2 and D3, do you now how many FCS players there are? Hundreds!
I would like you to do some homework. Find small school football players that entered the portal with one year left and were drafted. Do your homework. Go and find players that had only one year left and were drafted. I think this is a great exercise. If you are going to enter the portal you should know if it works right? I know every players circumstance is different, but every year there are 9-25 small schoolers drafted.
Small Schoolers are all over the NFL, if you are doing a great job at your school and enjoy your situation, why leave? I do not get it, stick it out and play your final year for the team that believed in you from day one. Everyone wants to chase a bag, instead of their dream. When you dreamed of playing in the NFL and no D1 school offered you a scholarship, did you dream stop? Or did it piss you off more to make it from a lower school?
I ask you this because I feel it needs to be said. Follow God not your heart! #TeamDiamond
