Player Summary:
Steven McBride is a 4th-year senior WR currently in his 1st season as a full-time starter after transferring from Kansas in the off-season. He typically aligns as the outside WR on the left side of the formation. Possesses solid height and poor weight with long arms. Shows a solid release off the LOS, able to beat press coverage by attacking the DB’s leverage and swatting away hands. Good at manipulating the defender’s hips to win leverage and create separation. Solid acceleration when running straight on vertical routes or drive routes underneath. Shows decent bend when stemming his routes. A physical route-runner who will fight through tight man coverage and through collisions in zone or off-man. Tracks the ball well on deep routes, and adjusts his route as necessary. In contested catch situations, utilizes his arm length to extend and haul in passes with notable physicality at the catchpoint. Possesses soft hands to pluck the ball out of the air from different angles. Times up his jumps well to catch the ball at its highest point. Able to adjust around his frame to bring in throws outside of his strike zone, and will get his feet inbounds to secure catches on the sideline and in the end zone. He generates good yards after the catch with solid burst, and good functional strength and physicality to fight through defenders for yards after contact. A physical blocker in space with a willingness to win in this area. Possesses adequate top-end speed; he is not someone who will take the top off of a defense. Adequate snap when breaking on his route and must improve in this area to create better separation; rounds off his routes too often. Shows some stiffness when breaking back towards the QB on hitch/comeback routes. Needs to work on leveraging defenders in space as a blocker. Lack of size may hinder his ability to withstand hits and jams from NFL defenders.
Scheme Fit:
Fits best as a possession receiver at the next level.
Power Statement:
A skinny receiver prospect who utilizes solid athleticism, notable physicality, soft hands, and LOS skills to win as a pass catcher, and shows a willingness to make an impact as a blocker. He must develop his route-running ability to make it in the NFL, and his lack of overall size is concerning considering his physical play-style.
