Top Small School Performances of Week 8
The eighth week of the college football season saw a plethora of big performances at the G5 and FCS levels.
G5 performances of the week
James Madison Sr. DL Jalen Green
Green came into No. 24 JMU’s Thursday night clash with Marshall with 8.5 sacks and left with 13.5 after a monster five-sack night in a 20-9 win.
Green is now three sacks off of the single-season school record and had 5.5 tackles for loss as the Dukes continued their undefeated season, but are not eligible for postseason play due to outdated NCAA rules on FCS to FBS transitioning teams
South Alabama Sr.RB La’ Damian Webb
Webb, who had rushed for eight scores coming into Tuesday’s 55-3 win over Southern Miss.
He left with 12 after running for four scores in the win, along with 102 yards on the ground on 20 carries. Webb also caught two passes for 26 yards.
Webb, who ran for 1,063 yards last season and 13 touchdowns is on pace this season to eclipse both of those, with 573 yards in seven games this season.
Memphis fifth-year RB Blake Watson
Watson, a transfer from Old Dominion, ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. In his first year at Memphis, Watson, 5-9, 195 lbs, has rushed for 593 yards and seven scores this season, while also catching 29 passes for 248 yards and another score.
In the 45-28 win over UAB, Watson also caught three passes for 15 yards.
Butler Sr. RB Jyran Mitchell
In a 37-10 win over Dayton to move to 5-3, Mitchell ran the ball 16 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.3 yards per rush. Mitchell, 6-0, 205 lbs, has the size to contribute at the next level, as rushed for 929 yards and 111 touchdowns on 6.37 yards per rush and 116.1 per game.
Mitchell has also contributed as a receiver, catching 14 passes for 122 yards and two scores. In the win, Mitchell caught four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.
Tarleton State Jr. RB Kayvon Britten
Britten ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in a 42-0 win over Morehead State. Britten, 5-7”, 195 lbs, has rushed for 755 yards and nine touchdowns on 119 carries this season
After rushing for over 180 yards against Eastern Kentucky, he has now eclipsed 100 yards in two straight weeks for the first time this season
Illinois College Jr. QB Destin Chance
In a 72-0 win for D3 Illinois College over Lawrence University, Chance threw for eight touchdowns and 465 yards on 26 of 37 passing in his first action of the season.
Chance has thrown for more than 400 yards in each of the last three games, and has 30 touchdowns already, 28 threw the air and two rushing.
UNC-Pembroke RS Jr. QB Colin Johnson
In D3 UNC-Pembroke’s 56-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, Johnson completed 19 of his 28 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson picked up three touchdowns on the ground also, along with 85 yards on 11 carries.
Johnson, 6-2, 205 lbs, has thrown for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns this season with eight interceptions. Johnson has also rushed for 562 yards and eight touchdowns.
