Player Summary:
Fourth-year junior with average height/weight measurements, lean build, and moderate length at the outside corner spot. Spent the first three years of his collegiate career at UNLV, where he was a three-year starter for the Rebels. Transferred to Cal during the 2023 offseason and currently serves as CB1 in the Golden Bears’ 2-4-5 defense conducted by Head Coach Justin Wilcox and Defensive Coordinator Peter Sirmon. Williams possesses proficient play speed, recovery speed, and physicality, which enables him to keep a tight cushion while in phase. Displays quality hand use at the LOS in press-man coverage; Offers a fluid lower-half and efficient COD to open his hips and bail in bump & run coverage. He has great instincts/awareness to put himself in a position to make plays on the ball. Has a tendency to anticipate route concepts and overcommit himself at the top of the route, which causes him to lose cushion in man coverage. Quick, well-developed foot speed provides ample reactionary athleticism and plant & driveability when transitioning out of the backpedal. Boasts strong hand-eye coordination, ball skills, and timing to create turnovers or force incompletions by playing through the hands of the receiver. Visibly tough and active as a run defender. Operates with high-contact courage and a mean streak. Exhibits secure tackling ability in the open field and a willingness to step into the box to stuff the run at the LOS in short-yardage situations. Adds valuable special teams versatility as a return specialist but would need more reps to give scouts a better look into his special teams viability at the next level.
Scheme Fit:
Man-coverage dominant field corner.
Power Statement:
Williams is a well-rounded cornerback with prominent coverage skills, notable play speed, competitive ball skills, and high-level toughness & tackling ability in open space.
