Player Summary:

5’10, 200-pound sixth-year senior with a compact build, a bulky frame, and a thick lower half. Former three-star recruit and 36th-ranked running back prospect in the Class of 2018. Spent four seasons at Syracuse before transferring to Alcorn State before the 2022 season. A tough, physical, downhill runner with significant play strength, high-quality contact balance, and substantial power to shed tackles on initial contact. Boasts sufficient initial quickness and acceleration/burst at the snap. Possesses strong instincts and vision to set up potential running lanes across the LOS. Has ample patience to allow time for running lanes to develop, and does not show any hesitation when hitting the hole. Flashes instinctive body control to get skinny through tight gaps in the interior. Difficult to corral once he reaches the second and third levels. Offers adequate elusiveness to make defenders miss in the open field but would rather put his shoulder down to gain a few extra yards. Absorbs contact efficiently and runs with a low COG at all times. Keeps his feet driving through contact and consistently pushes the pile when defenders rally to the ball. Appears to be a primary inside runner, but he will break explosive plays on outside runs when he can beat defenders to the edge. Owns moderately good play speed, straight-line speed, and long speed. Has decent speed for running back standards. A bit one-dimensional regarding his running back skill set. Provides some security as a pass blocker in pass protection and a lead blocker in two running back sets. Operates with an aggressive temperament as a blocker, but needs to clean up his overall technique. Must move his eyes quicker to adjust to delayed blitzes from the backside. Average receiver out of the backfield; Has a reliable set of hands but is a poor route runner with a limited route tree. Special teams versatility is questionable as of now.

Scheme Fit:

Pro-power/inside zone/wide zone run system with 22 personnel tendencies.

Power Statement:

Howard is a strong, hard-nosed, one-cut running back with pro-ready physical measurements, distinguished contact balance, and notable break tackle ability in the backfield and open space.
