Player Summary:

Derrick Canteen is a 4th year senior at Virginia Tech. He spent his first 3 seasons at Georgia Southern then transferred to Virginia Tech for the 2023 season. He possesses an overall solid height/wingspan/frame for his position, can play inside or out in my opinion. Shows good Off-Man ability and solid Bail technique at LOS, plays with overall good balance and footwork in coverage. Displays very good coverage ability in Man, has good hip fluidity to turn and transition in coverage and good speed to bump and run with most. Overall, shows good route rec and instincts in Man as well, has a good feel for leverage and anticipating routes at breaking points. Shows solid ability in Zone as he is a very good athlete with good transition quickness and fluidity in space and plays QB’s eyes well. Canteen possesses good ball skills as well, able to time PBU opportunities well as well as possessing good hands to create turnovers. Canteen displays very good ability to leverage lanes in run support as well as good tackling ability when coming downhill around LOS. Adequate Press ability at LOS, shows good physicality but tends to get turned around with double moves on releases. Although shows good route rec in Man, has tendency to get grabby at release points. Shows adequate ability to pass off Zones in coverage, can get caught ball watching. His average size can create mismatches for him vs taller wideouts which limits his ability on the outside. Can tend to struggle tackling in one-on-one opportunities in space, can struggle wrapping up.

Scheme Fit:

Slot CB in a Man-to-Man defensive scheme

Power Statement:

Derrick Canteen standing 5 foot 11 has many thinking he’s an automatic slot at the next level, but he has very good Man coverage ability and with his timing and ball skills he’s able to make up for it and find success. With his Zone play needing improvement his best fit at next level is in a Man scheme, I do think he can improve in that area and become a well-rounded corner, and if he can do that, I think he can become an impactful starter at the next level.
